The Fabulous Gardens

There are eleven gardens open over the two days spread out across the village.

19 London Road

A botanist’s garden started in 2016 with a large collection of roses, irises and alliums as well as other herbaceous perennials and bulbs. 
Unfortunately not wheelchair-friendly due to gravel paths.

31 London Road

A gravel driveway leads past the house into a formal garden area.  Seating in the middle surrounded by borders including lavender beds and roses.  A weeping willow at the boundary.  Walking through the trellis archway leads to the lawn, the vegetable beds and a mature five tree orchard.   

Gravel driveway may be difficult to negotiate with a wheelchair. 

1 The Chestnuts

A wildlife-friendly garden with flowers, fruit trees, vegetables and a small pond. A path runs through the flower border inviting visitors to see the plants close-up.

102 Queens Close

Features flower gardens at front and rear of house, seriously affected by last winter, with a reduced variety of shrubs, perennials and annuals.  Also, a productive vegetable garden including polytunnels with a variety of crops, some in homemade containers.Gravel frontage, maybe unsuitable for wheelchair access.

Parkhouse, 87 High Street

The gardens were landscaped and newly planted during spring 2020. The plant beds are laid out in a grid format with gravel paths and include some reflecting water tanks. The planting is a mix of structural grasses and herbaceous plants which blend into the meadow. They attract a lot of bees and butterflies and provide structural seed heads during winter.

27 High Street

A large garden of mature trees and fruit trees with borders, pond, grass maze and a secret garden!
Uneven surfaces, gravel and water hazard. Could be difficult for wheelchairs.
Wood turning craft stall. All profits to Harston Open Gardens charities.

33 Royston Road

Harston House, 38 Royston Road

Two acre garden divided by walls with mature trees including ginkgo, cedar and wellingtonia and drainage ditch with flag iris. Mixed borders, rose arches, kitchen garden with scheme of raised beds, orchard of old apple and soft fruit trees and newly established wild flower meadow. An artist’s garden full of surprises and a greenhouse full of fascinating aeoniums.

4 The Footpath

A very small suburban back garden.  Re-designed & re-planted in 2021. 
The colour scheme is almost entirely white & purple with a few exceptions.
Like many gardens, mine has suffered this last winter with several plant losses,
but hope it will have recovered sufficiently to be enjoyed.

33 Chruch Street

A mature garden behind a new house which has mixed cottage garden borders, a pond, raised beds and a greenhouse. This year the garden is planted for insects and wildlife, especially bees and birds, dedicated to peace and quiet. 

Dove Cottage, 37 Chruch Street

A paved area with herbaceous borders and wildlife pond. Two areas of lawn with rose beds and mixed borders. A kitchen garden area with raised vegetable beds, greenhouse and fruit.

Harston Manor, Church Street

Mature garden surrounding the house with river vistas and old yew hedges dividing the garden into rooms. A rill with water loving plants runs along the front of the house.
Both Days – Plant stall, Childrens Miniature Gardens and Garden Hunt hand in (for a prize). On Sunday only – Music, Bees and Darwin Nurseries
